RBM Kicks Up Sand Close To Home
After several weeks on the road with the IHRA, the Randy Brown Motorsports team returned home for a weekend at the beach. It wasn’t an ordinary weekend at the beach, as the team was on hand to compete in the annual Monsters On The Beach for a four race weekend. The event takes place yearly at the Oceanfront in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where the beach is transformed into a huge playground for the monster trucks. The entire team was excited at the chance to perform close to home. Randy Brown and Grave Digger are regulars to the beach, as both were in attendance for the 5th year in a row, while Joe Parnell and El Toro Loco both made their first visits to the infamous Oceanfront.
Friday night kicked off the action with the first of four races on the weekend. Both trucks were fast from the start, as Brown and Parnell qualified first and second respectively. The duo fared well in eliminations with Parnell advancing to the semi-finals, and Brown coming up just short of taking the win in the final round. On Saturday afternoon, Brown continued his consistency advancing into the semi-finals. With a quick turnaround between events, Brown remained on his game putting the Grave Digger into its second final round appearance of the weekend. The race was close once again, but Brown was just a truck length shy of taking the victory. Things started off rough in qualifying on Sunday. As Brown left the starting line, the input shaft broke, leaving the Grave Digger crippled at the line. Brown would be unable to return in racing, but would be back for freestyle later. Parnell rose to the occasion with his teammate sidelined in racing as he worked his way through the bracket to the final round. Despite giving it all the crazy bull had, Parnell was narrowly defeated.
While racing was the only competition on the weekend, freestyle was still a huge part of the action going on in Virginia Beach. The drivers put on a spectacle all weekend long as they attacked the sandy course prepared for them. Parnell had several highlights on the weekend with some huge air and a spectacular slap wheelie on Friday as seen in the video below.
After picking up nearly 50 total freestyles in 2010, it comes to no surprise that Randy Brown and Grave Digger face high expectations every time they hit the track for freestyle. All weekend long Brown delivered, exceeding expectations with four spectacular freestyle performances to the delight of the legions of Digger loyalists in the hometown crowd.
